Very little can compare to the sinking feeling of a parent agonizing over their child’s
competitive loss; a season with promise, potential and perseverance; a season
hopeful of reaching the equivalent of what the games highest honor offers; an
elusive victory that vanishes with the blowing of the final whistle to end the game
and any chance of recovery. What’s a parent to say or do to ease the heartache?
One thing we don’t want to do is – look back and make comparisons.
I once read that ‘comparison is the death of contentment’. When we say to
ourselves ‘if only…..’ these statements can lead us down a dangerous path.
If only..the clock didn’t run out. If only..we had more time. If only..we could play them
again. Fortunately our lives are not defined by the win-loss record of a season or
100 seasons. God defines our lives and He makes no comparisons. For reasons
we may feel disheartened over or events our children have yet to encounter I
believe everything happens for a reason. Maybe this gives us an opportunity to
spend quality time with our children; or communicating with them on a level that
focuses on our unconditional commitment to their well being. Having dinner
together at a reasonable hour can be a welcomed change. We, nor our children,
are defined by comparison. We are defined by the ‘path of contentment’ we
choose to take for ourselves and our families. A habit of comparison can lead us
to dissatisfaction with everything we own and everybody we love and offers our
children excuses to compare themselves against others. Whatever the
circumstances are, they are not to be compared to anyone or anything. The
lessons to be learned may not be recognizable today, but trust me when I tell you
they will be immeasurable down the ‘road to contentment’. When our young men
and woman see us handle adversity and disheartening events with acceptance and
gratitude we will have defined ourselves to our children so they will learn to accept
and be grateful for a quality of life that far out weighs the score. Our role is to help
our children discover their path to contentment already defined for them in the
greatest game of all…..LIFE!
Hugs!
